LA Jolla: A Celebration of Its Past

La Jolla. A Celebration of its Past
There are other charming books written about the jewel-by-the-sea, La Jolla, but this one adds a special touch that enhances our beautiful resort with fascinating facts from the past. Famous names such as Irving J. Gill, the architect, Ellen Browning Scripps, Charles and Anne Lindbergh, Gregory Peck, and Cliff Robertson, to name a few.
The world renowned Scripps Institute of Oceanography with its pioneers, such as Roger Revelle, is one of the many outstanding features and facts of a well written record of our paradise-on-earth village.

Though not a native of La Jolla, I have visited it since 1938. I moved my residence here in 1985.

I have sent this book to family and friends out of town who have also become intrigued with this Town with the Funny Name by Max Miller.

Indeed, anyone, anywhere, interested in history and the arts will open a book filled with them.

La Jolla: A Celebration of its Past
My husband is very impressed with Patricia Daly-Lipe's book, so much so that I haven't had a chance to read it yet. He has read a number of books about our home town of La Jolla and found this one to be truly superior to the typical tourist offering. The overall quality of the book is demonstrated by the breadth of the topics covered coupled with the knowledgable glimpses of La Jolla offered by several resident authors.

Learning from La Jolla : Robert Venturi remakes a museum in the precinct of Irving Gill
Published in Unknown Binding by Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego ()
Author: Hugh Marlais Davies
Average review score:

Excellent!
This is a very handsome book - of great interest for architectural buffs or historians. It pairs two great architects - Robert Venturi and Irving Gill - in a unique, engaging, and informative way. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (in La Jolla, California)is one of the finest small museums in the country, well worth a visit to see outstanding architecture as well as cutting-edge contemporary art.

Gem of a book for a gem of a museum
This is an outstanding book for anyone interested in the work of two great architects - Robert Venturi and Irving Gill. The combination of their work at the museum in La Jolla is masterful, and this book gives a fascinating look into the museum's history and Venturi's thought processes as he sought to restore the historic "Scripps House" while expanding and modernizing the Museum of Contemporary Art. A great find - makes me want to visit La Jolla and see it for myself!

Another Venturi Classic
Buy this book even if you've never been to the La Jolla museum it describes. If you've been to the museum, it's worth buying to give you pause to reflect on what you've seen. This book offers both the history and theory behind Venturi's reshaping of a wonderful museum in an attractive location. Those of us who remember the museum in the old days have got to be impressed with what Venturi has done. Although this text is all too brief, it provides the illumination needed to appreciate more fully this California classic.

A Must-Read for any La Jollan, and more
This is a beautiful book. It is exquisitely written and the photos are breathtaking. Andujar really did her homework and explains the history of some of La Jolla's landmarks, from schools and hotels to the famous La Jolla Cove. I lived in "the Jewel" for many years, but never understood its glory until I read this book.

A wonderful collection of tried and true recipes!
After reading the first cookbook from La Jolla Country Day School (La Jolla Cooks), I was really glad to find out that they had just published a second cookbook. This book contains wonderful family recipes which have been passed down for generations, as well as international and gourmet recipes. I've tried many of the recipes in the new cookbook and they are delicious and easy to follow. There is also nutritional information for all the recipes. When I saw that Jeanne Jones had written the introduction, I knew that the book would be fabulous...and it is!

The San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve: La Jolla Cove, Vol. 1
Published in Paperback by Picaro Pub (2002)
Author: Judith Lea Garfield
Average review score:

A Necessity for Touring La Jolla Cove, La Jolla, CA
La Jolla Cove is one of the best West Coast dive sites. The San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve is the definitive book on La Jolla Cove. The inside front cover has a detailed map of the reserve, which is valuable for dive planning. The text stars with a short history of the ecological reserve and La Jolla Cove. There is a summary of the points of interest of The Cove, and some tips on how to maximize your animal sightings.

This book would be worthwhile for swimmers, skin divers, and scuba divers. Children, especially would enjoy identifying the animals in La Jolla Cove. The Cove has abundant life; it is not necessary to be a diver to appreciate it.

The next 48 pages of the book are pictures of various plants and animals (all aquatic except for several birds and a ground squirrel) that are found in La Jolla Cove. Grasses, kelps, sponges, anemone, abalone, limpets, snails, Octopi, lobsters, crabs, star fish, sharks, rays, eels, seals and lots of fish are included. Each plant or animal has an approximately 3.5 x 5 color photograph, is identified, has an informational blurb, and its appearance, size habitat and food is described.

I have found, while diving La Jolla Cove, that this book not only helped me identify animals, but also to spot animals (especially limpets), because I had seen pictures of what I was looking for. I haven't seen a better guide for La Jolla Cove, or to help identify marine life in Southern California, for that matter. This book has helped me on many of my Southern California dives that were not in La Jolla Cove.

The book has glossy pages that repel water well. It would be a good idea to consider buying two copies, one for underwater use and the other for surface use. I look forward to Judith L. Garfield's book on La Jolla Shores and Canyon.

LA Jolla Spindrift
Published in Hardcover by Carroll & Graf (June, 1998)
Author: Jack Trolley
Average review score:

Wild, Funny, Impossible, Like a Bruce Willis Movie
Living in San Diego, I'm interested in books, especially crime books, set in this city. I don't think jack Trolley knows squat about how the real San Diego police work, and are, but who cares? Donahoo is a Bruce Willis-cop type character, and indeed, this book reads more like a script for a Bruce Willis movie. Absurd and wild things ahppen, like a nutty action movie, and there are plenty of laughs, enough to let you know that Trolley isn't taking himself too seriously. There's some glimmers of good writing as well, and in many ways, Trolley's sty;le reminds me of Jermone Charyn's. I'll have to go read the other books as well, as this one was good enough to make me check out the rest of the series.

The Hotel Detective
Published in Hardcover by Mysterious Press (May, 1994)
Author: Alan Russell
Average review score:

Full of cliches, predictable story, flat writing
One of the most boring book I've read.

My favorite of his
This is my favorite Alan Russell. I Just love Am in his first mystery. It is absolutely hilarious but the mystery is well done also. The "Bob Johnsons" are the best! They are reminiscent of Sharon MacCrumb's BIMBO'S OF THE DEATH SUN. I definitely recommend this one!
